1. Are you trying to eliminate the curatorial aspect in your gallery?
1. We do not try to eliminate it, it’s just not there. Benzinka works with the lust of artists for independent work.
2. What is the concept of your gallery like?
2. Benzínka cannot be called the gallery, at least not in the common sense of the word. Ordinary gallery production is exactly the thing we are trying to avoid. Our events are organized for one day only, we want the art to be for instance a celebration, even if the short one. The artworks remain on site, they cover each other. The space becomes gradually subject to nature deterioration and human intrusions. It remains opened all the time, anybody could “exhibit” there. We address the artists according to the style of their work, whenever we feel that they might be interested in working in such a space. Or they address us. They prepare their projects on their own, they pay for them, they only consult them with us regarding the technical or functional parameters of the ambitious space of Benzinka gallery.
3. Do you know about any contemporary art gallery abroad with a similar concept, which is as well run by the artists and whose activity remains in the non-profit sector? Would you give me its website and email address, please? Choose one gallery only.
3. Surely it does exist, but we don’t know about it. Most of the projects differ in details, which are rather important to us.
4. Are you willing to participate in a small conference held in October 2009 on the subject: Role of the curator in contemporary Czech fine art?
4. I don’t know, may be. The question is discussed quite often, the answer to it can’t be found in these discussions but rather in our everyday reality.
